Book Report: Skinny

This book starts off with Giselle, a 22-year old med. school under grad. that after having Hospital Treatment for Anorexia decides to move in with her Hungarian mother and eighth-grade sister, Holly. This is much more than a typical book about a young girl suffering from Anorexia. It starts off with Giselle's story but it quickly emerged into a rich and powerful tapestry involving the whole family. When their parents immigrate from Hungary Giselle's mother was already pregnant, but Giselle's dad had doubts about whether or not the child was his. After they settle in their new home, they have another child and they name her Holly. Now that she is born, their dad obviously has favoritism over Holly, and this affected Giselle a lot. Throughout the story both characters Giselle and Holly speak in different voices, so we understand both their point of views in the story.

From this book I learned that small things that happen to you as a child affectt you for the rest of your lives, and might even cause a psychological disorder throughout your lifetime. The love of a family is very important. If you get neglected as a child by one of your parents, you will forever hold that anger inside. It might just be the only cause of all your problems. I have a friend who was married and was expecting a child. But she seemed to be having very bad nightmares, when she slept; And the couple was afraid of scaring the baby. So they decided to go to a therapist and they found out that the reason the girl was having nightmares was because when she was little her father used to molest her friend; But she couldn't remember very well because her dad repeatedly carved in her brain to keep it a secret never to tell. That's why it affected her in her dreams when she got older. She got therapy and got over it, and had a beautiful healthy child.

My conclusion is that Therapy is good for us. I believe that at some point in our lives, as people we all need some kind of therapy treatment. Now in days teenagers, even children go through so much in life and it can be very traumatizing. I highly recommend this book, to all readers because it holds a little bit of everything in it; And we can learn very important lessons from it.
